El dualisme biologia i cultura a l’hora d’entendre el fenomen humà continua sent una opció de treball realista, més enllà dels intents del trencament acadèmic. Som biologia i som cultura, i entre les dues visions ha crescut un atapeït terreny amb interessantíssimes interaccions i relacions mútues. Potser, però, és quan volem intentar entendre el nostre propi significat quan podem tenir menys clares les interaccions: fins a quin punt els determinismes (que, diguem-ho clar, existeixen) poden produir un buit en  les nostres aspiracions, entre elles la del concepte de llibertat? Un concepte, d’altra banda, emergit en el marc d’unes condicions culturals ben concretes. L’humanisme, pot o vol deslliurar-se de les seves bases biològiques o culturals? En restaria res si ho fes?


Jaume Bertranpetit és catedràtic del Departament de Ciències Experimentals i de la Salut de la UPF i membre de l’Institut de Biologia Evolutiva (UPF-CSIC). Els seus camps de recerca se centren en l’estudi i la comprensió de la diversitat del genoma humà –diversitat de les poblacions humanes, evolució humana– i en la interacció entre biologia evolutiva humana i altres camps, i inclou també la genètica dels caràcters i malalties complexos i l’evolució i la història de les poblacions humanes. Algunes publicacions seves més recents tracten de la detecció i comprensió de la selecció natural en el genoma humà, a la recerca de les bases genètiques de les adaptacions específiques dels humans o de poblacions concretes i de com la selecció natural ha forjat la biologia única dels humans, en el que es pot anomenar biologia evolutiva de sistemes.

Victoria Reyes-García és investigadora ICREA a l’Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals (ICTA) de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. La seva recerca se centra en els sistemes locals de coneixement ecològic, recerca que inclou també els beneficis que proporcionen, els factors de canvi que els afecten i les seves possibles contribucions a la conservació i al desenvolupament. Per analitzar els efectes del canvi global en les societats rurals i  les respostes socials a les qüestions ambientals utilitza una perspectiva multidisciplinària. A més, duu a terme treballs de camp en diferents poblacions indígenes per entendre la naturalesa adaptativa del coneixement ambiental local i el canvi cultural.
