Research Design Short Course. First Year Doctoral Students

Class schedule: October 18th and 25th 2017 (From 2 to 5 pm)

Course Summary
This course develops core skills in research design, guides students through the logic of the research enterprise, and provides them with the analytical, methodological, technological tools necessary to conduct research. While the course will incorporate examples from the natural sciences and engineering, most of its emphasis are on projects with a social science component in it.  Throughout the course, we move from the conceptual and epistemological aspects of research design (including research question and literature review) to the development of research methods and case study selection. By the end of the course, students will be able to explain the purpose of their research and design a study. Students should also be able to critique and evaluate the research conducted by other researchers. Please note that this is not a Methods course. The class will be organized and led as a research seminar with readings, discussions, and in-class exercises. Students are expected to come prepared to class with readings completed and participate actively in class discussion.

Training objectives of the course:

1. To train students in sound research design, especially so for social science research, in asking good research questions, and select appropriate methods for research

2. To train students to gain the necessary knowledge to understand what it means to do research with qualitative and quantitative data, how they both differ from one another, how both sets of methods are complementary to assist in the advancement of knowledge.

Main learning results

Research methodologies:
Being able to identify the epistemological approach of one’s research project and analyze the methodological and analytical implications of the research project, and understand how qualitative research differs from quantitative research and how they can both contribute in differing way to the development of scientific knowledge.

Research Design:
Training students in sound research design, asking good research questions, and selecting appropriate research methods.

Writing and review:
Being able to present research results in a detailed and scientific manner. Be able to critique other researcher’s work.
