Abstract
Literature review unveils key challenges for the urban sustainability along the water cycle that can be articulated around four main foci of knowledge for management support: the hydro-social cycle, the urban water throughput, water equity, and water governance and financing. In order to approach such challenges, different analytical methods can be used. Their flexibility and adaptability to diverse contexts varies across methods. Moreover, water management deals with a holistic element intertwined in socio-environmental processes in urban areas. The System of Environmental Economic Accounting for Water (SEEA-Water) has been proposed as a suitable tool that involves all key conditions for urban water sustainability. The main objective of this article is to assess to what extent the tools available within the SEEA-Water can be actually used to evaluate the sustainability of urban water management. This is tested in the challenging space of the intermediate Latin American cities. The city of Santo Domingo de los Colorados is an emblematic case of the growing city in Ecuador. The results present the state of the water resource in this city, according the main points in the analysis. Several finding are currently examined to determine the helpfulness of this tool as a guide for the water sustainability in urban areas.
 
Bio
Susana is a PhD candidate at ICTA-UAB. Her current work focuses on urban sustainability and water resources in growing Latin American cities, as well as the water accounting at the urban level in support to study the urban sustainability. Her background education includes an undergraduate degree in Environmental Engineering at the Central University of Ecuador (2010), and holds a Master degree in Ecological Economics, from the Faculty of Social Sciences FLACSO located in Ecuador (2012).
