Álvaro is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA). He completed his Degree on Environmental Sciences and his Master on Environmental Studies at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). Since January 2014 he is also affiliated to the Metapopulation Research Centre of the University of Helsinki (Finland), where he has made several research stays.
His research areas are ethnoecology and biocultural diversity, focusing mainly in the study of Local Environmental Knowledge of indigenous peoples. He has participated in international research projects in Bolivia, Costa Rica, Kenya and Madagascar, conducting more than 20 months of fieldwork, mostly with local communities. He has published more than ten scientific articles and he has been awarded on different occasions for his academic trajectory, including with Olli’s Prize 2014 from the University of Helsinki and the Extraordinary Prize on Environmental Sciences (year 2011).
