Sara Maestre Andrés holds a Master degree in Environmental Studies and a bachelor degree in Environmental Sciences, both from the UAB. In her master´s thesis she carried out research on political ecology and ecological distribution conflicts in the context of storage facilities for nuclear waste. Currently, she is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).
Her research is focused on designing strategies and policy tools that improve current biodiversity conservation policies and ecosystem services provision. She is also interested in assessing unintended indirect (rebound) effects and potential ineffectiveness of such policies and advancing knowledge on strategies and governance structures that include intensive stakeholder participation. Her interests also focus on analysing complex social-ecological systems and social network analysis for improving natural resource governance. Her thesis is part of a wider European research project (CONNECT) which resides under ERA-NET BiodivERsA.
