Petra Benyei holds a BSc in Sociology (with specialization in human ecology and population studies) from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and an Erasmus Mundus MSc in Rural Development from Ghent University. She has worked in projects related to the evaluation of the South African land reform (whilst doing an internship at the PSGARD in Pretoria) and projects related to climate change mitigation strategies in rural Spain (whilst working within a project run by Paris Diderot University researchers). She is currently a PhD student at the Laboratory of Socio-Ecological Systems in a Global World researching on the use of citizen science tools to complete traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) inventories and increase TEK knowledge and agrobiodiversity conservation awareness in young rural populations in Catalonia.
Her main research interest area is citizen science, with especial interest in its potential to help gather and share Traditional Ecological Knowledge (contributing by doing so to TEK in-situ and ex-situ conservation) and to break the divide between scientific and lay knowledge. She is also participating in the elaboration of the Spanish TEK Inventory (IECT), specifically contributing to the section on cultivated plants and agroecosystems by means of encouraging students in rural areas to gather TEK from their elders and share it via interactive platforms.
