How to raise citizens’ interest in the progress of scientific work when dealing with current and relevant socio-environmental challenges (i.e., climate change, health, food security, secure energy, smart and green transport, inclusive and secure societies) remains an unresolved question. People disenchantment with science represents a critical limitation for ensuring a democratic, knowledge-based society.
In order to address this challenge it is crucial to examine and understand the motivational and structural barriers that constrain citizens’ engagement and learning in environmental science and technology, as well as to explore participatory approaches and innovative methodologies to foster a direct interaction and dialogue between society and research.
