ICTA-UAB to organise a session on circularity and raw materials at the EMP-E 2020 Conference

ICTA-UAB researchers Laura Talens and Cristina Madrid will be participating at the fourth Conference of the Energy Modelling Platform (EMP-E 2020) “Modelling Climate Neutrality for the European Green Deal”, which is put together in co-operation with the H2020 Energy Modelling Group, made up of eight Horizon 2020 projects.

This annual conference will take place on 6th- 8th October 2020 and seeks to bridge the gap between scientific modellers and policy makers at all levels, with the help of European Commission representatives. It will bring together scientists and policy makers working on current energy modelling and energy policy issues, looking at the current and future opportunities for change.

To reach beyond local, national and regional policymakers, and engage with the widest possible range of stakeholders involved in the EU energy system, modelling and policy insights developed during the conference will be opened up to a peer review process and compiled into an informative report.

ICTA-UAB researchers from the Sentinel project will be participating on Tuesday October 6th in the focus group 2 devoted to “Circularity and use of raw materials”. The aim of this session is to discuss the nexus between raw materials and energy technologies and learn about how some energy systems models (ESM) are working to integrate raw materials in their models. This topic has progressively gained more importance in the past years, especially since the EU is committed to its decarbonisation, the publication of several lists of critical raw materials for the EU and the EU circular economy action plans.

Laura Talens will moderate the session and Cristina Madrid will talk about the “Development of an environmental and Bio-economic assessment for Energy System models: the case of ENVIRO”, Cristina Madrid López, ICTA-UAB, SENTINEL project. 
During the session, a particular focus will be given to renewable energy sources (RES) technologies and how the availability and supply of raw materials could affect the RES targets set by the European Commission (EC). The session will conclude with a wrap up from each of the discussion groups and the identification of aspects relevant for the EMP-E 2021.
