For the past decades, scholars studying human institutions have created theories and ethodologies aimed at unravelling the complexity of the coupled systems that govern human-environment interactions. Despite these efforts there is mounting evidence pointing towards an unprecedented degradation of our environment. We are in urgent need for a new environmental governance regimen, one stemming from a different epistemology, one that does not aim at reducing complexity but that embraces the incompleteness of our knowledge and promotes the plurality of avenues by which one acquires wisdom. I call one of such alternative governance frameworks- reciprocal environmental governance and I suggest it should be based on the notion that humans are part of nature and hence places the concepts of embeddedness and relational inter-dependence at the core of any policy recommendation to manage socio-ecosystems. In this short seminar I will briefly portray some of the shortcomings of our normative approaches to environmental pollution and resource management while I will sketch out some of the properties for a reciprocal environmental governance regimen. I will then present some key findings based on a case study that addresses our relationship with the Plantae Kingdom. In doing so, I hope to (i)
raise some of the issues with our current environmental governance approach; and (ii) propose a novel avenue to redress socioecological governance regimens.

Bio
Nicolas Kosoy is an ecological economist interested in the interface between environmental policy and human development. He completed his PhD in Ecological Economics in 2008 at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) (Spain), where he also coursed an MSc in Economics and Natural Resource Management (2005). He also has a postgraduate degree in Conservation Biology from the Durrell Institute for conservation and Ecology at Kent University (2002) and an undergraduate degree in Biology from the Universidad Simon Bolivar (Venezuela) (2001).
Currently, he is an Associate Professor at McGill University jointly appointed at the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences under the Department of Natural Resource Sciences and McGill School of Environment. Previously, he was a Senior Programme Officer for the United Nations Environment Programme where he coordinated the implementation of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (2008-2010).
