New study dismisses green growth policies as a route out of ecological emergency

Laura Talens Peiró

Laura Talens Peiró holds a degree in chemical engineering by the Universitat Politècnica de València, a BSc in combined studies in engineering and a MSc in Clean Manufacturing Technologies both from the University of Teesside (United Kingdom). Her doctoral research, supervised by Dr. Gara Villalba Méndez and Dr. Xavier Gabarrell i Durany, explored the use of exergy analysis as tool to evaluate biofuels production. This was followed by postdoctoral research as part of the PROSUITE Project and a Marie Curie fellowship supervised by Prof. Robert Ayres at INSEAD (France), on the metabolism of scarce metals. Afterwards, Laura worked as scientific policy officer at the Joint Research Center of the European Commission in two main EU policy areas: the development material efficiency requirements for new Ecodesign regulations and the revision of the EU methodology on critical raw materials. In late 2017, Laura was granted a Beatriu de Pinós scolarship and joined the research group SosteniPra at ICTA. She has acted as external expert and an external evaluator of H2020 project proposals by the European Commission.

Research interest
Her career as a researcher has been driven mainly by the need to understand how materials are used by socio-economic systems and the resulting environmental impacts generated by their life cycle. To better understand this problem, she uses methodologies such as material flow analysis, life cycle assessment, exergy analysis, among others, all with a common baseline: the principles of mass and energy conservation. She is especially interested on the use of material by the electrical and electronic industry. Indeed, since the end of 2017, she has worked in the Database of SEmiconductors and other components (DoSE) which aims to shed light on the types and quantities of materials used in electronic products, and allow for a more accurate evaluation of electrical and electronic equipment.
