Born in Barcelona, Santiago Gorostiza completed an undergraduate in Environmental Sciences at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). During the following years, he combined his jobs at environmental NGOs and in the public administration with studies towards a second Bachelor’s degree in History at the UAB, graduating with Honours. After carrying out a Master’s in Contemporary History at Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) with the support of a Fundació La Caixa scholarship, Gorostiza started his PhD at the Centro de Estudos Sociais of Universidade de Coimbra (Portugal) as a Marie Curie ITN fellow of the European Network of Political Ecology (ENTITLE). His doctoral research, supervised by Marco Armiero and Stefania Barca, examined how the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and the Francoist victory and state-building efforts transformed Spain’s socioecological relations and landscapes, both materially and symbolically. Gorostiza joined ICTA in 2018, after completing his PhD, and is a María de Maeztu unit of excellence post-doctoral researcher, awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. 

Research interests
Trained as a historian, environmental scientist and political ecologist, my research focuses on the history of human-nature relations. I am particularly interested in the socioenvironmental disruptions caused by war and militarisation, which I explored in my PhD through the case of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Similarly, I am fascinated by the interweaving of notions of nation and nature, and in how Fascist and other authoritarian movements and regimes use and have used nature politically in their discourses and practices. I combine my research on the 20th century with a growing interest in the challenges that early Modern societies experienced throughout the Little Ice Age, with a particular interest in drought and urban water management.
