Summary
A multi-disciplinary research approach. The research takes a political ecology angle and focuses on the role of institutions as socially recognized rules, property rights, labour relations and other informal rules that determine environmental outcomes. It also uses insights from science and technology studies to explore the scientific and economic presumptions underpinning the commodification of ecosystem services and the appropriation of land, examining the material and discursive relationships amongst involved actors. The commodification of ecosystem services is analysed looking at how ecosystem services are defined, quantified, monitored and imagined as “commodities” and how different actors derive benefits through new and existing institutional arrangements, thus transforming practices and social relationships around land-use. In turn, the examination of ‘land grab’ processes focuses on their ecological and social implications for particular people and places, also paying attention to institutional arrangements and winners and losers in the accommodation of new productive practices and spaces.
